With Back-to-School, comes heavy backpacks, which can lead to shoulder, neck, or back injuries for kids. Here are some backpack safety tips for helping your child avoid a back injury this school year.
Backpack Safety and Avoiding Back Injuries
Select the Right Backpack – Look for a backpack with padded straps and multiple compartments that is not too large for your child. Having multiple compartments helps to distribute the weight in the backpack more evenly. A backpack on wheels could be an option to reduce back strain.
- Pay Attention – Keep the backpack limited to just the necessities by helping your child clean it out daily. Watch your child’s posture to see if they are slouching or leaning, or if they are experiencing any back pain.
- Help with Proper Fit and Lift – Help fit the backpack to your child’s body by adjusting the straps so it is not too loose. Try to discourage them from wearing the backpack on just one shoulder, which can lead to shoulder, neck, or back pain.
- Proper Lifting Techniques – Teach your child how to pick up the backpack with two hands and a bend at the knees.
